Wood Carving or Sculptures
WOOD CARVING and creating art in wood is one of the most gratifying of all of the media. Each material in which one works gives its own reward and appreciation to be sure. A bronze will last a thousand years- bronze from Greek and Roman ruins are still in great condition. Stone will have a cold smooth feel to the touch. Ivory is intrinsically precious and the carvings while small give a presence far beyond their size.
Wood is warm and its smell brings the beholder back to grandpa’s wood shop and memories of projects of the past. It may be used to produce a sculpture of larger scale. It is one of the most honest of all of the media also- everyone has carved something out of wood at some time in his life and knows the skill that is required to produce the work before him. The beholder may clearly appraise the work which was required to create what he is holding.
Wood is also very demanding. When a chip is carved away it may never be put back. Planning is required at the outset and takes into consideration the grain of the wood and the selection of the type of wood.
Creating a wood sculpture is also a brave undertaking if the artist intends that his work may be viewed or purchased. When I began to do sculpture I used ivory as my medium. This was a precious material, so I could not make a mistake or ruin a valuable material. But there was an upside to this as well- a less than perfect rendering could be carried by the value of the material. That is not so with wood. The sculptor takes a relatively worthless material and places his talent and labor into it. The purchaser of the finished piece does so only because of what the carver has done to it. As such his effort and skill level lie naked.
In the following catalog of sculptures there are descriptions of various images which are available on request but for which there are no photographs. Most are available either fully painted the appropriate color or in the natural wood color.
