Alabaster Sculpture

ALABASTER has a singular quality about it. To the sculptor there is a “feel" to it which is unique of all other stones. It says, “elegance" to the carving. The carving process is arduous and the dust is instantly gritty, not powdery like soapstone or grainy as with some marbles. Diamond is the necessary tool to use because of the hardness of the stone. In spite of the hardness of the stone it can not be hurried or the stone can actually scorch.

When the sculpture is completed one can see not only the rendering of the artist, but the elegant beauty of the stone. If you were to snap the sculpture with the back of your finger nail it would ring.

As you look at the price schedule you may notice that a small increase in the dimension of an Alabaster art sculpture is often followed by a non proportionate increase in the cost. This is why that this is so. The increase on a flat surface is simple percentage, but when that same increase is carried to a three dimensional sculpture its increase is geometrical. In short, to increase the length of a bear one sixth actually will quintuple the actual volume of the sculpture. Another way to say it is that a pattern which would create a one pound bear when increased one sixth would not make a bear one and one sixth of a pound. The bear actually weighs five pounds. A small increase on paper makes a large increase of the final work.
